Pruritus ani and vulvae

What is pruritus ani and vulvae?

Pruritus ani and vulvae is itching of the anal or external female genital area. It can be caused by a range of factors, including diarrhoea, fungal infections (particularly after taking antibiotics for long periods), contraceptive pills, bodily secretions, stress, tight synthetic or rough clothing, haemorrhoids, diabetes, warts, eczema or seborrhoeic dermatitis.

While symptoms vary depending on the cause of the pruritus, all cases are exacerbated by rubbing or secondary infection.

What can you do about pruritus ani and vulvae?

Treatment depends on the cause of the pruritus, but relieving the symptoms is important to help prevent damage due to rubbing and scratching. Fungal infections need to be identified so that they can be treated appropriately.

Wear loose, soft clothing, which allows air to circulate and does not rub on the skin, and don’t use deodorants on the affected area as they may increase the irritation.
Use a soap-free cleanser to wash the area after going to the toilet. Pat dry and avoid rubbing.
