Facial Rashes

What are facial rashes?

The skin on the face can be sensitive and rashes may occur easily, especially in infants. Typically, the affected skin appears red and flushed, and minute red spots may occur. The skin can also be swollen, itchy or feel inflamed.

Facial rashes in babies may be caused by licking of the lips, thumb sucking, dummy use or dribbling. Common causes of facial rashes among adults include reactions to various face creams, make-up and shaving creams or abrasions from razor blades.

What can you do about facial rashes?

A soothing and anti-inflammatory preparation should be applied. Any itching sensation needs to be quickly relieved to prevent scratching and further skin damage.
If a rash is caused by a substance, avoid using the substance as well as any products containing known irritants such as soap and lanolin. This is particularly important immediately after healing when the skin may still be sensitive.

Emollient creams will help keep the skin in good condition and can help to prevent recurrence.
