Haemorrhoids (piles)

What is haemorrhoids?

Haemorrhoids are swollen and inflamed varicose veins commonly located in the rectum or anus. They are often caused by chronic constipation, but can also be the result of a low-fibre diet, pregnancy, hereditary factors, sitting for long periods, obesity, severe exertion, or certain diseases.

Symptoms may include traces of blood after going to the toilet, severe pain or aching, and itching, inflammation or lumps around the affected area.

What can you do about haemorrhoids?

Treating haemorrhoids can be as simple as changing your diet and exercising. Eating more fruit, vegetables and cereals, as well as drinking plenty of water, will help. Getting regular exercise can also help to keep your digestive system working properly.

Clean and dry the area gently as excessive rubbing can also increase the risk.
Haemorrhoid ointments can help to relieve symptoms, and applying a cold compress to the area may help soothe the affected area.
