Key Milestones

1953 – Ego founded by Gerald Oppenheim and his wife, Rae.

1956 – First major expansion of Ego’s premises in Elsternwick, Melbourne.

1960 – Ego’s product range expanded to eleven products. Work begins to broaden the business to NSW and to develop export markets in New Zealand, Singapore and Papua New Guinea.
 
1978 – To accommodate its rapid expansion, Ego moves to a new factory in Cheltenham.

1985 – As part of a major upgrade of Ego’s facilities, the company moves to its current site, a state-of-the-art research and manufacturing facility in Braeside, Melbourne, opened by the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce.

1986 – Ego’s commitment to quality and excellence independently recognised by the Commonwealth of Australia’s Small Business Award, presented by the Hon Joan Child, Speaker of the House of Representatives.

1988 – Ego launches the SUNSENSE range, a world first in sunscreen technology.

1990 – Gerald Oppenheim’s son, Alan, becomes Managing Director of Ego. Alan’s wife, Dr. Jane Oppenheim, becomes Scientific Director.

1992 – Ego is listed in Australia’s leading business magazine – Business Review Weekly – as one of the top-100 fastest growing companies.

1993 – Ego expands its business into the Middle East, starting in the United Arab Emirates.

1994 – Extended finished goods warehouse opened by the Hon Peter Costello, MHR.

1995 – Melbourne Business Award.

1996 – Victorian Government Export Achiever Award.

1996 & 1997 – The Age/Dunn and Bradstreet Award (manufacturing category).

1999 – Major multimillion dollar development of Ego’s operations completed, including a new dispensary, research laboratories and administration areas, along with an expanded warehouse, opened by the Minister for Industry, Science and Technology.

2000 – Sigma Achiever Award in recognition of product excellence and service to the pharmaceutical industry.

2001 – The Age/Dunn and Bradstreet Award (manufacturing category).

2003 – Middle East regional office opened in Dubai.

2004 – Subsidiary created in Singapore to get closer to Ego customers.

2005 – $6 million investment in Ego’s Melbourne production and research facility.

2005 – ASMI Award of Excellence presented to Alan and Jane Oppenheim, in recognition of their service to the Australian Self-Medication Industry.

2006 – Alan Oppenheim received the Entrepreneur of the Year Award (southern region; retail, consumer and industrial products category).

2006 – With international sales growth of 41%, Ego was commended in the Governor of Victoria Export Awards (large advanced manufacturer category).

2006 – New despatch warehouse and new flammable goods warehouse completed.
